Safina replaces Williams as World No.1

Russia's Dinara Safina will replace Serena Williams as world number one, despite never having won a Grand Slam title.Safina's brother was also the men's top player in the world in 2000.Safina will replace Williams who has been on top for 11 consecutive weeks. Safina said that she was very happy to share the achievement with her brother Marat.Safina is now the second Russian woman to hold the top spot after Maria Sharapova.She was announced World No.1 after Williams suffered a shocking defeat 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 against World No.95 Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic.Safina becomes the 19th world number. In the past years Safina has won four WTA Tour singles titles and was runner-up five times. She was also a silver medalist at the Beijing Olympics.
